Sant Eknath Maharaj and Bhavarth Ramayana: Compassion, Equality, and Harmony

The Living Beacon of Universal Compassion

Sant Eknath Maharaj (1533–1599 CE) occupies a sacred position in the Varkari Sampradaya, traditionally remembered as the pillar of the spiritual edifice founded by Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj. Living in the ancient town of Paithan along the Godavari River, he presented a model of spirituality grounded in patience, forgiveness, and universal brotherhood.

His conduct demonstrated that devotion to Shri Vitthal must translate into active empathy for all creation. When returning from his pilgrimage with sacred Ganga water meant for religious rituals, he encountered an emaciated donkey dying of thirst on the hot sands. Without hesitation, he poured the holy water into the animal's mouth, viewing the suffering creature as a manifestation of the divine. Similarly, he disregarded rigid caste taboos by dining at the house of an impoverished devotee and feeding hungry children before conducting ceremonial feasts. For Eknath Maharaj, spiritual wisdom was hollow if it did not express itself in compassion toward the downtrodden.

Bhavarth Ramayana: Dharma for the Common Household

Sant Eknath Maharaj authored the monumental Bhavarth Ramayana to bring the ideals of Prabhu Shri Ram directly to the common people. During an era when scriptural knowledge was largely restricted to scholars of Sanskrit, he composed this epic in the simple and accessible Marathi Ovi metre.

In the Bhavarth Ramayana, Shri Ram is revealed not merely as a noble historical ruler, but as the supreme consciousness present within every heart. Through allegorical storytelling, Eknath Maharaj provided spiritual guidance and moral resilience to a society burdened by foreign invasions and social fragmentation. He completed roughly twenty-five thousand verses of this work, and his disciple Gavba completed the final portions following the saint's departure.

Revitalizing Sant Dnyaneshwar's Dnyaneshwari

One of the most consequential contributions of Sant Eknath Maharaj to the Varkari Sampradaya was his scholarly restoration of the Dnyaneshwari. In the three centuries following Sant Dnyaneshwar's Sanjivan Samadhi at Alandi, handwritten copies of the sacred commentary had suffered numerous textual corruptions, unauthorized additions, and scribal errors.

In 1584 CE, inspired by a spiritual vision, Sant Eknath travelled to Alandi. He located ancient manuscripts, cleared accumulated interpolations, and restored the original words of Mauli Dnyaneshwar. He set down a strict warning against making further unauthorized alterations. The authentic, refined text of the Dnyaneshwari recited by millions of Varkaris across Maharashtra today exists entirely because of Sant Eknath's diligent service.

Spiritual Lessons for Devotees Today

During the current off-season period between the Ashadhi and upcoming Kartiki Wari, pilgrims visit Pandharpur and Paithan for quiet reflection and study. Sant Eknath Maharaj proved through his own life as a householder that family responsibilities do not prevent intense devotion. By serving fellow beings, maintaining truthfulness, and constantly chanting the divine name of Panduranga, an ordinary person can attain complete spiritual freedom.
