What is Pandharpur Wari?
Pandharpur Wari (Ashadhi Wari) is a centuries-old annual foot pilgrimage in Maharashtra. Every year, lakhs of Warkari devotees walk roughly 250 km behind the palkhis (palanquins) carrying the padukas of Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram — from Alandi and Dehu respectively — to reach the Vitthal Rukmini temple in Pandharpur by Ashadhi Ekadashi.
The pilgrimage is far more than a religious ritual — it is a living, moving expression of equality, devotion, and shared faith, where caste, economic status, and region fall away and everyone walks together.

Each palkhi is made up of many dindis (troupes of devotees), a system organized by Haibatrao Baba in the early 1800s. Beyond the Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram palkhis, several other saints — Muktabai, Nivruttinath, Sopankaka, Eknath, and more — also have their own palkhis converging on Pandharpur every year.
