This concerns Pune
Two tons of fresh, fragrant blossoms wrapped the sacred Shri Vitthal Rukmini Temple in Pandharpur on Vijayadashami. It was a breathtaking sight. Marking one of the three and a half auspicious muhurtas in the Hindu calendar, the festival drew thousands of eager pilgrims to the holy town. Inside, the sanctum of Shri Vitthal, the shrine of Rukmini Mata, the Solkhambi hall, and the Charkhambi mandap stood adorned with intricate floral designs, bringing a peaceful grace to the entire temple.
Devotee Ram Jambhulkar Offers Pushpaseva
This pushpaseva was a voluntary offering from Ram Jambhulkar, a dedicated Vitthal devotee from Pune. He has done this for years. Season after season, Shri Jambhulkar decorates the temple halls during major festivals out of deep reverence. For this Vijayadashami, skilled florists worked through the night to ready the shrines before the first morning darshan. Pilgrims stepping into the sanctum were overjoyed to see the Lord surrounded by a vibrant canopy of yellow, orange, white, and purple blooms.
Over Twenty-Five Varieties of Flowers Used
Golden and saffron zendu blooms set the foundation, honoring the deep traditional ties marigolds share with Dussehra. And the decorators did not stop there. The team blended twenty to twenty-five distinct flower varieties and decorative foliage to complete the design. The floral selection included:
- Traditional blooms: Zendu (marigold), gulab (roses), shevanti (chrysanthemums), aster, and tagar.
- Specialty flowers: Orchids, anthuriums, carnations, sunflowers, lakshmi kamal, blue daisies, and pink daisies.
- Fragrant varieties: Jai, jui, and gulchhadi (tuberoses).
- Decorative foliage: Leaves of Ashoka, Kamini, Gypsophila, Money plant, and Dracaena.
Lush floral garlands framed the silver threshold, pillars, and arches of the Solkhambi and Charkhambi mandaps. The bright colors complemented the temple’s ancient stone carvings beautifully.
Devotee Inflow Ahead of Papankusha Ekadashi
The timing was perfect. Thousands of Varkaris were already entering Pandharpur ahead of Papankusha Ekadashi on October 21. Pilgrims observing the sacred fast gathered on the grounds from dawn to seek the quiet grace of Mauli. Resounding chants of "Ram Krishna Hari" and devotional abhangs echoed down the stone corridors as devotees waited patiently in queue.
Darshan Timings and Queue Arrangements
To handle the heavy rush, the Shri Vitthal Rukmini Mandir Samiti set up dedicated queue arrangements across the premises. Both the Padsparsha Darshan and Mukh Darshan lines moved steadily throughout the day. Temple rituals continue uninterrupted according to standard tradition:
- Kakad Aarti: Performed at 4:30 AM to awaken the deities.
- Nitya Puja and Panchamrit Puja: Conducted during morning hours following the morning aarti.
- Sandhya Aarti: Performed in the evening at dusk.
- Shej Aarti: Concludes the day at 11:00 PM before the temple sanctum closes.
Devotees visiting Pandharpur for Ekadashi can reserve token passes online through the official temple portal or join the designated general lines. Facilities are active day and night. Drinking water stations and shaded shelters remain operational along the queue lines for all visiting Varkaris.
