Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata to be Adorned with Ancient Jewellery for Navratri

Navratri is almost here. Inside Pandharpur's Shri Vitthal Rukmini Mandir, quiet preparations are underway. The temple committee has started the delicate task of cleaning and restringing the ancient jewellery for Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata. For the Varkari community, this brings overwhelming joy. Seeing their beloved deities adorned once again, especially after the recent chemical coating conservation process, is deeply emotional.

Ancient Ornaments from the Shivaji and Peshwa Eras

For centuries, everyone from powerful kings to humble Varkaris has surrendered their wealth to Mauli. They offered gold, silver, diamonds, and rubies. This priceless treasure is fiercely guarded by the Mandir Samiti today. Threading and cleaning began on Sunday. Co-chairman Gahininath Maharaj Ausekar and Manager Pravinkumar Gham are personally overseeing the effort.

History lives within these rare pieces. They date straight back to the eras of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Peshwas. Temple staff carefully inspect and string each gem before every Navratri festival. This ensures their absolute safety and preservation.

The Divine Adornment of Shri Vitthal

Lord Vitthal will soon stand in his breathtaking traditional attire. His festival ornaments are legendary. They feature gold anklets, the iconic Bajirao Kanthi, Matsya, Tode, and a stunning gold dhoti. A brilliant diamond belt will circle his waist, alongside intricate armlets and bracelets. Priests will also adorn him with a gold rakhi, the Kaustubh mani, and a Tulsi mala woven with pure gold beads. And there is more. He will wear an emerald and pearl necklace, a traditional Bormal, and a vibrant Navaratna necklace. Finally, his divine form will feature gold and diamond crowns, the Shindeshahi turban, a silver staff, gold Makar Kundal, and a sapphire and diamond-embedded gold tilak.

The Grace of Rukmini Mata

Rukmini Mata will mirror this divine splendour. Her traditional jewellery includes gold anklets, a magnificent gold saree, and multiple gem-studded waistbelts. Temple priests will decorate her hands with diamonds, rubies, Patlya, pearl bangles, Goth, Tode, and Hatsar. It is a rare sight. Devotees taking darshan during Navratri will receive the blessing of witnessing both deities in their full traditional glory.

Indira Ekadashi Darshan and Upvas Guidelines

Tomorrow is Indira Ekadashi. This highly auspicious day draws thousands of fasting devotees into Pandharpur. They seek the blessings of Lord Vitthal. In the Varkari sampradaya, the Upvas holds deep meaning. It is a sacred time dedicated entirely to devotion, chanting Abhangs, and spiritual purification.

Are you visiting the temple? Regular daily rituals like the early morning Kakad Aarti and late-night Shej Aarti will proceed on schedule. Please follow the queues. Specific arrangements exist for both Padsparsha Darshan and Mukh Darshan. You can also make special pooja bookings according to temple guidelines. Massive crowds are expected for Ekadashi and the upcoming Navratri festival. The temple administration advises all pilgrims to cooperate with security and volunteer teams.
