Sacred Simolanghan Procession in Dehu
Dehu was immersed in quiet devotion on Vijayadashami. On this sacred day, thousands of pilgrims gathered on the banks of the sacred Indrayani River to participate in the annual Simolanghan ceremony of Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj. The Sant's silver padukas rested inside a ceremonial Palkhi adorned with fresh flowers. It was a moving sight.
Then the procession began. Moving out from the main temple courtyard, the air resonated with rhythmic beats of the mridanga and clanging cymbals. Saffron flags fluttered high above. Varkaris chanted the sacred names of Gyanoba-Tukaram and Shri Vitthal, while devotees lined the streets of Dehugaon to offer prayers and seek blessings from the sacred padukas.
Rituals of Shami Pujan and Gold Exchange
Following centuries-old custom, the Palkhi moved toward the traditional village boundary for the Simolanghan ritual. Crossing that boundary on Dussehra has deep spiritual meaning, symbolizing victory and renewal. The moment arrived. At the designated sacred spot, temple trustees, priests, and elders conducted the worship of the Shami tree with Vedic chants and devotional prayers.
Devotees gathered around the Palkhi to offer fresh flowers and exchange leaves of the Apta tree as symbolic gold. Warm embraces followed. Villagers shared sincere wishes of peace and spiritual prosperity. And the ritual concluded with a grand evening Aarti, followed by the distribution of prasad to all assembled pilgrims.
Varkari Devotion and Continuing Heritage
The Simolanghan festival in Dehu holds immense spiritual value for the Varkari community. Sant Tukaram Maharaj spent his life spreading devotion and love for Shri Vitthal through his immortal Abhangs. That spirit endures. Local villagers and visiting Varkaris uphold these customs each year with disciplined devotion, keeping alive the traditions established by saintly ancestors.
Local administrative officials and police made security arrangements so the procession moved smoothly. Support was ready. Medical teams and water tankers were stationed along the route to assist senior devotees. After the rituals outside the village perimeter concluded, the Palkhi returned to the main temple complex amid joyful bhajans.
Spiritual Atmosphere Across Sacred Centers
The celebrations in Dehu coincide with post-Dussehra devotional activities across Maharashtra, including the observance of Papankusha Ekadashi. It is an auspicious window. Pilgrims who visited Dehugaon expressed deep joy after receiving darshan of the holy padukas. And many devotees are now preparing for upcoming seasonal fasts and darshan visits to Shri Vitthal-Rukmini Mandir in Pandharpur.
