Sant Narhari Sonar: From Rigid Shaivism to Universal Devotion in Vitthal

The Rigid Goldsmith of Pandharpur

Sant Narhari Sonar was a master goldsmith residing in the sacred town of Pandharpur. His devotion to Lord Shiva was fierce. It was so absolute, in fact, that he refused to even glance at the Shikhar of the Shri Vitthal Rukmini Mandir. Shiva was the only supreme deity for him. And so, he kept himself completely apart from the Varkari sampradaya and Lord Vitthal.

A Request for a Waistband

Everything changed when a rich merchant placed a special order. He wanted a golden waistband—a beautiful kargota—made specifically for Shri Vitthal. Bound by his strict vow, Narhari refused to enter the temple. He told the merchant to fetch the exact measurements instead. Soon, the merchant returned with the details, and the goldsmith crafted a stunning piece. But the fitting failed. The ornament was just too tight for the idol. He carried it back to Narhari for adjustments. This time, strangely, it ended up far too loose.

The Realization of Hari and Hara

Frustrated but determined, the merchant finally convinced the goldsmith to visit the temple himself. Narhari agreed reluctantly. Still, he tied a thick blindfold over his eyes to protect his vow. He stepped into the dark sanctum. Reaching out, his hands touched the idol to take the measurements. Suddenly, he felt matted hair. He felt a serpent coiled around a neck, and skin smeared with sacred ash. Convinced he was touching a Shiva Linga, he tore off his blindfold. Right then and there, the smiling face of Shri Vitthal looked back at him.

He squeezed his eyes shut, and instantly saw Lord Shiva. Opening them again revealed Lord Vitthal. In a single breathtaking flash, the illusion of duality broke apart forever. Narhari Sonar finally understood the ultimate truth. Hari and Hara are one and the same. From that day forward, he surrendered completely to Mauli. He became a devoted voice in the rich Sant tradition of Maharashtra.

Indira Ekadashi: A Time for Inner Realization

Today is the sacred occasion of Indira Ekadashi. Thousands of Varkaris are observing the holy Upvas and gathering in Pandharpur for Shri Vitthal-Rukmini Darshan. This day carries a deeper reminder about the true essence of fasting. It is not simply abstaining from meals. True fasting means letting go of our rigid beliefs. It requires us to shed our ego. Just as Sant Narhari Sonar shifted from fierce exclusivity to universal love, devotees today can use this Ekadashi to seek genuine spiritual awakening.
