A sea of Varkaris flooded Pandharpur for the holy Parsva or Parivartini Ekadashi. People poured in from every corner of Maharashtra, seeking the blessings of Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata. This Ekadashi carries profound meaning for the Varkari sampradaya. It is the day Lord Vishnu changes his sleeping posture during Chaturmas. Thousands kept strict Upvas and gathered along the Chandrabhaga river. Haripath chants filled the air, blending with the timeless Abhangs of Sant Tukaram Maharaj and Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj.

Heavy Rainfall Disturbs the Crowds

Then the skies opened up. Sudden, punishing rain lashed Pandharpur right in the middle of the celebrations. Water quickly filled the streets. The unexpected downpour scattered the crowds and brought real physical hardship to the pilgrims. Many had to rush for cover in nearby ashrams and flimsy temporary tents. Yet the Varkari spirit did not break. "Mauli" chants kept ringing loud and clear around the temple. True devotion easily outlasts the sudden weather.

Temple Darshan Closed for Three Days

Please pause your travel plans immediately if you are heading here. The temple administration has officially suspended darshan at the Shri Vitthal-Rukmini temple for three full days. This starts today, September 23, and runs until September 25, 2026. The ban covers everything. You cannot do the distant Mukh Darshan, nor can you perform the sacred Padsparsha Darshan at the deity's feet. This closure comes right after the massive Ekadashi crowds. It is a necessary step to care for the ancient idols.

Idol Conservation and Daily Rituals

Darshan is paused primarily to carry out crucial conservation work on the idols. Right now, experts are carefully applying a highly specialized chemical coating to the idols of Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata. This specific procedure has to happen periodically. It prevents the ancient stone from degrading and preserves the deities safely for future worshippers. Behind closed doors, the temple priests will carry on with all regular daily rituals. The early morning Kakad Aarti, the Nitya Puja, and the night-time Shej Aarti will happen exactly as usual. General entry is completely blocked. Devotees are kindly asked to be patient and wait until September 26 before traveling to Pandharpur.

If you are continuing your Upvas, traditional Varkari guidelines suggest eating simple foods like sabudana, fruits, and milk. Since a physical darshan is impossible right now, try performing Manas Puja at home. Sing the Haripath. Remember the divine form of Lord Vitthal in your heart.
