Pandharpur Corridor: Land Acquisition Process to Begin in 15 Days

The state government is moving fast on the proposed Pandharpur Corridor. Modeled after the massive transformations in Kashi and Ujjain, it promises to change the holy town forever. Land Acquisition Deputy Collector Santoshkumar Deshmukh announced that formal land acquisition for this Rs 3,993 crore project starts in 15 days. The core goal is simple. It aims to organize the temple surroundings and provide decent facilities for the countless Varkaris and devotees who visit Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata year-round.

Project Scope and Timeline

This ambitious corridor needs 64,000 square meters. That translates to roughly six acres of land hugging the ancient temple complex. Fortunately, the state already owns about 50,000 square meters of this property. Notices for formal acquisition will go out within 15 days. Then the real work begins. Physical acquisition should take six to eight months. We are currently in the quiet off-season. By launching surveys well before the massive Kartiki Wari in November, the administration avoids disrupting the heavy pilgrim traffic of Pandharichi Wari.

Impact on Local Properties

Change this massive comes with a human cost. The corridor's footprint directly affects about 450 residential properties and 400 commercial shops right by the temple. And the impact goes deeper. Between 207 and 225 local tenants will lose their spaces. The government recognizes this heavy social toll. To help these families, they have approved a dedicated Rs 201 crore rehabilitation policy. This relief money comes straight from the main project budget.

Rehabilitation and Compensation Details

Officials have mapped out clear cash and structural compensation for affected locals. Shop owners are getting a fixed rate. They will receive Rs 40,000 per square foot. What about the displaced tenants? Eligible renters who lose their locations can receive up to Rs 15 lakh, provided they meet the right criteria and have their paperwork ready.

But the plan goes far beyond just handing out compensation cheques. The rehabilitation effort includes building new multi-story complexes. Displaced traders will get fresh commercial spaces on the ground floors to restart their lives. Above them, the first floors are for the pilgrims. These spaces will serve entirely as shelters, resting halls, and clean washrooms for tired Varkaris. Also, the administration is building four new designated parking zones outside the main temple area. They will allocate shops to affected tenants at these new hubs.

We are witnessing the most extensive modification to the temple surroundings in recent memory. Today, eager devotees squeeze through incredibly narrow lanes just to get their daily Padsparsha or Mukh Darshan. The finished corridor promises wide pathways and a dignified queue system. The legal and financial gears are already turning. The administration is balancing the needs of local families with a historic vision. They are preparing the holy town for the next generation of pilgrims, honoring the eternal chant of Mauli.
