Chandrabhaga Riverbed Neglected After Ashadhi: Devotee Safety Left to Lord Vitthal
Wari news · 23 Aug 2026
Today is Shravana Putrada, the sacred Pavitra Ekadashi. Thousands of devoted Varkaris have reached Pandharpur. They observe a strict fast, standing for hours just to catch a glimpse of Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata. But down at the Chandrabhaga riverbed, the picture changes completely. The massive Ashadhi Yatra is over, and the administration seems to have forgotten this place. The area lies neglected. Right now, the safety of these innocent devotees rests entirely on Lord Vitthal.
The Absence of Basic Facilities
During the Ashadhi Wari, Solapur police and local authorities are everywhere. They set up heavy bandobast, run medical camps, and provide rows of mobile toilets. But today is different. Those basic services have simply vanished. The Chandrabhaga riverbed is dangerously slippery in several patches. And yet, there are no rescue boats anywhere. No warning signs exist, and no guards are stationed to watch over the devotees taking a holy dip. Also, the temporary drinking water and toilets are gone. This has left the visiting Varkaris struggling with completely unhygienic conditions.
Safety and Fasting Guidelines for Devotees
With the administration largely absent today, devotees need to look out for themselves in Pandharpur:
- River Bathing Safety: Please be extremely careful before stepping into the Chandrabhaga. Stick to the shallow waters near the banks. Do not wander into the deep end. Parents, hold your children tight.
- Health and Upvas Management: Keeping the Ekadashi upvas takes a toll on your body. Drink plenty of safe, bottled, or boiled water. Eat only freshly prepared fasting food, and skip the open stalls to avoid falling sick.
- Medical Emergencies: Without any medical camps on the riverbed, help is far away. If you feel dizzy or unwell, head straight to the Pandharpur Civil Hospital or a nearby clinic.
- Crowd Behavior: The queues for Shri Vitthal and Rukmini Mata are stretching endlessly today. Stay calm. Avoid pushing others in the line. Keep a close eye on your belongings, and always protect the elderly in your Dindi.
Administrative Action Required
Devotion in Pandharpur does not end with Ashadhi Ekadashi. Every single month, thousands of pilgrims pour into this temple town. The administration desperately needs to build a permanent safety network along the Chandrabhaga. We need round-the-clock guards, basic medical kiosks, and clean sanitation blocks. Until authorities wake up and provide these basics, the humble Varkari has only the grace of Mauli to rely on.
